Spotlight on Dylan Jagjivan: From Intern to Associate Director and beyond

In this Q&A, we chat with Dylan Jagjivan, Associate Director of Debt Finance, who shares his journey from joining the company as an intern to playing a pivotal role in our US expansion. Dylan’s story exemplifies the growth opportunities, open communication, and unique culture here at OakNorth.

What was your first impression of us?

Dylan: Coming in as an intern in 2017, I immediately saw the value of working at a dynamic, fast-growing startup rather than being just a cog in the machine at a larger institution. OakNorth offered the chance to work on diverse transactions and have direct client exposure right from the start.

What do you think makes OakNorth a unique place to work compared to other financial institutions?

Dylan: One of the key things that makes OakNorth unique is its flat organisational structure. You can communicate directly with senior management and even the CEO, which is rare in most financial institutions. From day one, I was entrusted with responsibilities that made a meaningful impact, and that’s been consistent throughout my time here. The opportunities for career progression are also exceptional—whether it’s learning new skills or advancing through the ranks.

Can you share more about your journey moving from intern to Associate Director?

Dylan: It’s been a whirlwind! In just three years, I went from being an intern to an Associate Director, which speaks volumes about the level of trust and responsibility OakNorth gives its employees. I’ve had the opportunity to work on a wide range of deals and projects, which has been instrumental in my growth. There’s no rigid training structure here, but that’s what makes it exciting. You learn by doing, and you’re surrounded by experienced individuals who are always willing to support you.

How did the opportunity to move to the US come about?

Dylan: The bank was expanding into the US, and they needed people who really understood how we operate. I was eager to take on the challenge and volunteered to relocate. It was a massive responsibility, stepping into a new market and helping establish OakNorth’s presence there, but the experience has been incredibly rewarding. I’ve been able to contribute to a crucial part of the company’s growth strategy and be a key player in building the brand and culture in the US.

What do you think has been your biggest highlight so far?

Dylan: Without a doubt, it was moving to New York. That was an exciting milestone, and it really showcased the trust OakNorth placed in me. I love the energy and fast-paced nature of the city – plus, you can’t go wrong with all the amazing food!

What’s your favourite thing about working here?

Dylan: The people, hands down. It’s a fun, supportive environment, and I get to work alongside some of the most knowledgeable and experienced individuals in the industry. I also appreciate the trust that the company places in me. Moving to a different country for work is a big deal, and OakNorth made me feel prepared and empowered to take that step.
